Somewhere in between the feather dipped in ink and the traditional #2 pencil, I imagine the writing utensil of the time might look something like this cool new Ototo Marshmallow. This whimsically rustic pencil is a wooden tree branch / campfire roasting stick complete with graphite inside and a handy marshmallow shaped eraser on the end. I guess it might fit in a pencil sharpener, but whittling it down with an old-fashioned pocket knife would be way more fun. Just don't accidentally roast it over a campfire.
