Outside of seeing gothic stone gargoyles perched atop old cathedrals or a flying Gremlin turning into a gargoyle in Gremlins 2, I didn't really know anything about them or their origins. Apparently, these demonic winged creatures initially served more of a decorative architectural function to help divert rainwater away from a building (interesting source read: 10 Gargoyle Facts).
