"Dad, you taught me everything I know about exterior illumination." - Clark W. Griswold

I can't believe we're still watching, loving, and endlessly quoting National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation to this day, which was released way back in 1989. That's 37 years ago as of this writing. Back then, Christmas decorations were much, much simpler. There was a Christmas tree decked out with treasured keepsake ornaments, cheap tinsel, and lights, the roofline had a single strand of colorful Christmas bulb string lights running along it, stockings were hung from the mantel, a few decorative holiday knick-knacks were placed around the house, homemade cookies were baking in the oven while a gingerbread house was being constructed from scratch, a snowman might be in the front yard if it snowed, and maybe there was a manger... it was all relatively simple, festive, cozy, and normal. Then this movie came out and the Griswoldification of extreme holiday home decorating began... and has now spread to Halloween, er, I mean Spooky Season as well.

Speaking of Griswolds and gingerbread houses, Griswoldification has come for those festive little edible cookie houses too, with this cool new yet quite retro-inspired National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation Cookie Kit from Create-A-Treat. Instead of a sloppily slapped-together generic gingerbread house, which, like peppermint candy canes, nobody ever actually ate, this kit includes everything you need to build the most famous overly lit and decorated home in Christmas movie history, the Griswold house. Sure, there may have been some copycat contenders in future Christmas movies, but this is the one that started it all.

The cookie house kit forgoes traditional gingerbread with pre-baked vanilla-flavored cookie walls and roofing and comes with assorted candies and colorful icings to decorate, hold it together, and cover it with (possibly) a grand total of 25,000 Italian-imported twinkle lights, er, I mean yellow dots of icing. Best of all, there's no wiring or bulbs to check when you finally finish decorating it and show it off to your unimpressed family.

Hmm, if you actually do decide to eat it, dunk the broken-off pieces in eggnog or milk served in a glorious Glass Moose Mug to really get into the spirit of an old-fashioned Griswold Family Christmas. Wow, I just noticed that I wrote that Moose Mug article way back in 2004... 22 years ago!!! If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now... where's the Tylenol? πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ«©
