No matter what I do, come fall & winter in Chicago, I get a terrible cold/sinus infection. It's most likely the simple fact that in Chicago, it can go from 80 degrees one day to snow flurries the next. Whatever the cause, I got my annual cold last week and I decided to hit the Internet and seek out a simple cure, once and for all. I just don't see the point in treating cold symptoms with over-the-counter medication that just hold everything in. The whole point that you cough and sneeze is because the body is trying to get rid of it, right?

I found an ingeniously cool & seriously weird little device called a Neti Pot that gets right to the root of the problem. A Neti Pot is basically a small specially shaped pot (like a genie lamp) that is filled with lukewarm water mixed with non-idiozed salt to create a simple saline solution. Guess what you do with it? You tilt your head and pour it up one nostril and the water pours right back out the other side, flushing out the entire nasal cavity along with any "congestion". You won't drown because you can breathe freely through your mouth and it only feels weird the first couple of times. I know it sounds creepy to pour water up your nose, but all I can say is that after a few flushings, my sinus infection was GONE, not hidden or masked by medication, but GONE! I used The SinuCleanse System ($14) in case you want to know.

Think of all the chemicals, fragrances, pollution, dust, pollen and everything else that you breathe in every day. Think of your morning commute as you sit trapped in a car exhaust parade for over an hour. All of this is first filtered through hairs and mucus membranes in your nassal passage which can get overloaded. You shower, brush your teeth and clean your ears because of build-ups, why don't you clean out your nose "filter" as well? Stop picking it and add a Neti Pot to your hygiene routine. I really like to let the world know when I come across something that is better ... Green Head Recommended!

What do you think of the Neti Pot? If you use one, how well do you like it? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments section.  -  18 Comments Tweet This on Twitter Share on FaceBook

Any one suffering from chronic sinus or allergies will benefit greatly. I have. Two hints, first it is best to use distilled water due to most metropolitan area water treatment chemicals, and second, use organic, non-iodized salt 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon for the best balance of antibiotic and cleansing results.

I know, it looks like a stupid hippie thing but it really works. It doesn\'t go into your throat, it just goes into your sinuses and cleans it.
It isn\'t new, it\'s been around forever.

I have done Neti every day (minus perhap 7) for 9 yrs, and I love it. It's better than a coffee in the morning, and I couldn't imagine life without it. I get so much clarity, mental alertness, and relaxation from Neti.
Try using 1/3 urine for even better results. The antibacterial properties of urine can get rid of any annoying little pathogens that may be lurking in the throat, nose, or sinus.
Om.

You snort urine every day? I know it\'s sterile but antibacterial? And wouldn\'t everything smell like p*ss for the rest of the day?

I just watched this on OPRAH..Dr. OZ had suggested to someone on the show to try it..w/water and salt that is..and she said it worked ..she no longer has to take any meds for sinus/allergy..Dr.Oz said the water goes up thru your nose to as far as it can go fills in all the membranes and removes and cleanses then it comes out the otherside..looks strange...but i'm up for anything that helps w/o having to take medicine..I think that's what's wrong w/the world today..we have medicine for everything...

I recommend Nasaline for this. It's a syringe with a rubber head that fits the nostril... and you control how much force to use. I use it twice a day this time of year.

After using the neti pot for a week I delevoped extreme pain upon pouring the water through my nasal passages. I think it is due to the chemicals found in the tap water. Try using distilled warm water only!
