A regular knife block only lets you store a certain number and a certain type of knife. The Kapoosh Universal Knife Block ($30) let's you store up to 20 different knives and utensils amongst its tightly packed set of polpropylene rods, which frees you from the old style slots. It's a good idea especially if you have a collection of different types of knives/utensils that you want to keep organized and sanitary. Also everyone will probably ask you where you got it.

See also this review. It's more detailed and seems to be from someone who has had a chance to use it for a while. Good stuff. They also now make it in steel.

We have had this for a year. I would definitely be careful with putting too many items crossways in the block. Even with just a few items in ours it split the wood down the right hand side. We attempted to wood glue it back together, but it split worse once we put the black center back in place. I also would recommend washing the inset every other month or it will get stuck inside the wood part and become impossible to move. I do like it though. It really meets my needs better than any other block.

There is a different Kapoosh knife holder that is made from stainless steel. Much more "modern" than the traditional wooden knife block. If you go to the For Your Home section of Vat19.com's website you can see this other style.
