Earlier this month, representatives of the Hualapai Tribe stated that the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation would be constructing a glass, U-shaped walkway called the Grand Canyon Skywalk, that extends 70 feet over the edge of the Grand Canyon with a suspension of 4000 feet over the Colorado River. Along with this glass skywalk there will be a visitor's center offering meeting venues and a cafe that will feature outdoor edge patio seating. They hope to have this new attraction completed and open to the public by early 2006, but as of this writing, they have still yet to find an insurer for the project!

This "attraction" is definitely not for the timid or for those who have a fear of heights, but there may be some thrillseekers out there who are willing to brave the depths of the Grand Canyon. Would you take one step out on this thing? Let us know in the Comments below.

UPDATE: Construction has begun on the Grand Canyon Skywalk! Click Here to read the press release.

UPDATE 2: The Grand Canyon Skywalk has been unveiled and officially opens to the public March 28, 2007! Check out some pictures of reporters actually out on the skywalk walking on the glass below. Everyone who is looking for a fun little getaway, this would be an incredible thing to behold. I can't wait to actually step out over the canyon.  -  ( 255 Comments )

Without a doubt ! ! ! That would be an awesome exerience. In fact, I think there should be bungee jumping from that platform, or perhaps some sky-diving.

You have to be kidding! This sounds like a roller coaster ride without the movement. Definetly, not for the faint of heart. I would make sure people with pace makers, and etc were not allowed on without their Dr.’s note. for me, thanks, but no thanks. I am to young to have a heart attack from a sight like that.

I wouldn’t trust it – are there building codes on Indian reservations?

I believe the walls of the canyon have given former structural base to other edifices, such as dams and bridges, however, these have had difficulty with the crumbling aspect of the rock. I don’t believe I would be interested in walking out on this structure.

If I knew that at least three quarters of the overall weight of this structue extends at least 150 feet inland as a counterweight to the part that extends out over the canyon, I might try it.

As far as the Brits comment, Go Home and Stay there, for the Walkway, ABSOLUTLY!!! I would do this!!! To be compared to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado that has just added the “SKYCOASTER” ride out over the edge of that canyon at 1500 Feet!!

I would not walk on it, and it isn’t because I’d be afraid—I have backpacked at the edge of cliffs in the Grand Canyon several times. I would not walk on it, because I am incensed by the commercialization of our national parks. The Grand Canyon isn’t Disney World for cat’s sake!! A century ago, Teddy Roosevelt said, “Leave it as it is…. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it…. Keep the Grand Canyon as it is.”

Who is going to clean it, especially after the guy that leaves the brown skid mark across the glass? Good luck to all that a brave enough to put a toe on it let alone bungee jump.

Why not make the glass walkway rim to rim and then cover the entire canyon in class and decorate it with Christmas lights?? While we are at it lets hang ornaments from Delicate Arch.

I agree that it will be a scary thing. Also, I agree that there should be a dam to hold back more water for Las Vegas, NOT.
We attended an Elderhostel at Peach Springs, and one evening a speaker told us of the way the local indians took care of the lands, and adored them. Well, the next day, we went to the helicopter landing pad, and on the way, the road was littered with all kinds of junk, beer bottles, garbarge of all kinds. So much for caring for the lands.
So we will see more of this kind of stuff!!
