Using the Hammacher - - why are the resolution options grayed out? There are seven options but no ability to tone down the resolution level. I think that's why it takes so long to transfer.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I tried two of these and returned them both. Easy to setup and use on both XP and Vista, but the output quality was really poor. Either way over exposed or underexposed. Do not waste your money on this.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
This is me - from previous post.I called the company and, sadly, my USB port is not USB 2 as required.I thought my USB port in the back of my Gateway motherboard will work but I guess I was wrong. I know my computer is old but I didn't know that the required USB 2 port if much different.Oh well... now i need to spend the money AGAIN on shipping it back!I have MacBook Pro and hope I will find something that is comparable with MACs. Anyone can help me with that?ThanksAnna

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I bought it for my husband and i\'m very frustrated because I spent $116.00 (including shipping) and it is not scanning the slides. I installed the driver and the software. I restarted the computer (Windows XP) and still was getting an error message. I started the software to see if it would work anyways, and though it opens the program, it\'s not recognizing the device (the slide scanner). ARGHHH!I\'m waiting for the tech support to call me back.Anyone has helpful hints for me?

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I just used the scanner today and found it satisfactory. The quality of scan is not great and it does take a long time to load for saving. However, I purchased extra trays and while the scans are loading, I re-load the trays with 12 slides so am ready to go again. It would be impossibly slow if you are only using the one tray that holds 3 slides, but it is much better than my regular scanner. Not the greatest resolution, but I have a few thousand slides packed away for about 50 years and would never look at them again, except for this. It will probably take me a year to transfer all of them, but I have the time. My kids are ecstatic that they are seeing these images of their childhood.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I have scimmed through all the comments with regards to scamming 35mm negatives for restoration/preserving. Now generally speaking you would want any picture that you hope to print to be scanned at 2400dpi minimum and converted to 300dpi for printing. Due to the nature of scanning negatives you want to make sure the scanner being used specific for scanning negatives. Though this device seems to produce a desired outcome at what resolution does it provide it and does any editing have to be done afterwards? Though it may be a quick solution it also might not be the best if you have high hopes.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
K.Heissner,Ran into the same problem with loading the OVTFboot.dll file. Haven't tried downloading the file yet, but just talked to customer service at H-S. They say my computer (laptop) is not compatible or that I haven't done all the system updates, then told me to try it on a desktop!... (It's a brand new Dell D830 w/ XP Pro with auto updates turned on.) Very frustrating!ksb

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
Scanner won\'t install and operate because it cannot load the device driver c:\\windows\\system32\\OVTFboot.dll. After downloading the driver, the following message appears: \"Missing Entry: OV500Start\" (Catch22), an indication that this driver is not the correct one as it doesn\'t have the entry point OV500Start.Where can one find the correct OVTFboot.dll driver?
I bought this item last year from Hammacher and I am very pleased with it. Considering the slides and negatives were sitting in boxes in the basement rotting, this was an amazing alternative. I too had problems installing but a quick phone call to the company (they were VERY friendly and helpful) and they helped me figure out that I didn't have a USB-2 port on the front of my hard drive. We have since got a new computer and it was simple to install after that. I only have two real problems (1) If you get a tiny smidgen of dirt IN the viewer, it shows up on EVERY picture you do. I have been using canned air, but you have to be very carful about what you 'slide' into the machine. (2) I disliked only getting the one tray of each, though - and the new option for purchase is still bad. I would like to be able to order EITHER 3 of the slide or the negative trays for half the price. I only have slides to do (and there are hundreds of them) and with only one tray it is taking forreeevvveerr. I have made YouTube video montages of my husband's family slides (all of his family has since passed on) so being able to have these pictures available to him anytime he wants is priceless to me. The quality may not be 'picture perfect', but if I can make my husband smile while he looks at the photos...it is worth every penny I spent. If anyone is interested in seeing the quality of the photos - here is the youtube video page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvxrjUDXBfw

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I found I could control the exposure by adding a 2-3 pieces of blank negatives, your mileage may vary. Now just hit the device wont start, it maybe due to a windows upgrade screwing the device installation, will try removing and reinstalling.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
After much frustration getting it installed ... (you DO have to use USB 2.0 so I had to get a card for that, then I couldn't figure out how to make it 'work' the manual wasn't clear enough for this old codger! However reading feedback in this column I tried hooking it into Photoshop again and sure enough I Acquired the scanner and transfered a .jpg file resolution was 72 but picture width listed as something like 13 inches and results seems acceptable. with 1000 plus old slides it's gonna take some time ... 3 at a time! But at $100 I think I got what I paid for.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I, too purchased the VuPoint unit and have been extremely disappointed. Not only is the quality poor, it takes a LONG time just to save 3 slides. Has anyone heard of or had good results with using a lightbox and a digital camera? Came across a website ~ http://www.modelerschoice.com/Articles/slideconvert.htm ~ that set the slides up on a lightbox, set a digital camera to the macro function with a tripod, and simply took photos of each slide. I believe they cropped/touched up the images in photoshop. Sounds like a MUCH faster, cheaper and easier way to get those 35mm slides into an electronic form, but before I go out and try and find a lightbox, just thought I'd add this idea into the mix.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I have tried all of the help hints; VuPoint help is non existant.
I purchased this item from Hammacher using the free shipping code per the very kind person who published the current code (see above messages.) I am returning the scanner due to its poor performance. The scanner would not operate on the standard front USB on my older HP, but it worked on the 4 position USB card that I installed a couple of years ago. Reason for return: takes too long for the image to process for saving. I waited over ten minutes for just one file to be saved. Previous comments stated that the VuPoint corrects for dust; not so - dust showed up on the three test slides that I processed. I am upset that I wasted so much of my time by reinstalling several times. I tried an install on my new loaded Gateway (Vista Ultimate) and it did not function. I guess that I will keep looking for an alternative.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I have used other slide scanners and flat bed scanners for slides, but this is the easiest to use. I had no problems installing in Vista. You need to set the setup.exe to the XP Compatibility mode and install as the Administrator. It takes a while for the driver to install and even longer for Vista to set the driver after the scanner is plugged in.If you don't use the ArcSoft software, you are limited in resolution selection - you don't get any choice. Typical file sizes for the various resolutions for 24 bit color are: DPI Quality File size - MB 1800 Normal 0.4 3600 Normal 1.0 3600 High 2.0 3600 Highest 10.0Because of the large sensor (5MB), this unit is much faster than older low cost scanners.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I am considering buying one of these. I have a few hundred old slides from the 60s and 70s that I would love scan into jpegs. My one question is this: From reading the posts and the info on the scanner, it sounds like it will only scan 35mm slides. I do not know if my slides are 35mm or not. They measure 2 inches by 2 inches square. That is the outside x/y dimension of the white cardboard frame. The dimension of the film portion of the slide (inside the cardboard frame) is either 1 inch by 1 inch or 7/8 inch by 1 3/8 inch. Some of the slides have "Kodachrome" and "Ektachrome" logos on them. Does anyone know if these will scan with this device and if so, what type of quality to expect? Any and all comments and info is much appreciated. Thanks, Scott G.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
Folks,I finally received the Veho scanner from Brookstone (that says it is Vista compatible) and am going to try it... I will caution folks that a review I found online at another site says that the VuPoint and Veho are not the same product - I don't understand as they look IDENTICAL! but that is what the poster said (he called them and was told the Brookstone model is made by Veho, and the Hammacher Schlemmer one is by VuPoint... Any insights, confirmations, or otherwise? You can find the Veho at:http://www.veho-uk.com/index.php?f=displayproduct_detailcontent&t=Product+Detail&ID=1096and VuPoint at:http://www.vupointsolutions.com/fs-c1.asp-----------Here's the skinny, as far as I can tell from hunting around, all the machines we are talking about are made by one company, VuPoint Solutions, for the various suppliers - Brookstone (under the Veho name), Hammacher Schlemmer, Frontgate, Summit, ThinkGeek, etc.:http://www.vupointsolutions.com/fs-c1.aspVuPoint makes it clear they sell it through resellers… The only one I am not sure about is the Veho from Brookstone - though many of the specs are the same and it looks exactly the same save the Veho logo, it is the only one that works with Vista and costs $30 more ($129 vs. $99)I found reviews of it in several different places, I think all positive:http://www.brookstone.com…http://www.smartcomputing.com/…Of note - The slide converter businesses that “Scan your negatives/slides for you” seem to charge in the neighborhood of $0.25 to $0.50 per slide (25 to 45 cents), which means that this device would pay out in as little as 200 slides for the XP compatible device for ~$100, if the quality is comparable.Lastly - what about quality? Well, one of the businesses that claims to be the best at this says they deliver 2000 DPI vs. 1829 DPI for this machine. I am not an expert on Megapixels and DPI's, but from reading (and from other reviews), people seem satisfied with the quality thus far.I am about to take the plunge to scan all my dad's old slides, and we'll see how it goes!

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I bought this scanner for $99 total from Hammacher, thanks for the code. I had no problem loading the program onto my Windows XP. However, I don\'t know if my Users Manual had printing errors or what, but it was terribly unclear. (Reminded me of Ikea instruction, with lame pictures and no english). The diagrams did not match the instructions, and a few parts seemed to be missing. Call me dumb, but it took me awhile to realize you slide in the slide tray from the right side - I was trying to force it in the left side. The manual also didn\'t say anything about not being able to move the slide tray back and forth, so I forced that too, before I realized that it only slides right, and you must reload if you want to rescan. Luckily, I didn\'t seem to break it. When you load a slide into the live view screen, it goes from light to dark exposure along the spectrum. If it starts too dark, which can happen if you go from one slide to another too quickly, toggle the slide guide back about an inch to the right to show the black plastic between the slides, then toggle back left. This resets the machine\'s exposure on high. Take a snapshot along a few diffent exposure points and then look at them large screen to see which one is best. The most important part is to be sure it\'s ALL done transferring pics to the computer. The mouse only shows the \"hourglass\" icon (work in progress) when directed over anything BUT the OVT scanner window box. I got to the end of a few hours work and realized that the number of slides saved did not equal the number of slides scanned, though I thought I had transferred them all. So, scan 3 slides at a time, transfer 3 slides at a time (do something else in the meantime). Close the OVT scanner window and make sure those three are all saved before moving on. OVerall, this product is frought with problems - especially for the technically lame, like me - but for the money is the only alternative I know of to get these precious old slides out of the attic.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
My dad is always talking about his old slides, so when I saw this device I had to get it for him. I scanned some of the slides for him and it was easy to use. The only part I did not really like was that you can only put 3 slides in the tray at a time. I also had to adjust the tray a little to get the picture centered. Overall it was a good buy.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
A previous comment stated "the hardest part of this was initially installing it. After installing the scanner's drivers and the PhotoImpression software, I plugged the scanner into the computer via USB (which powers it too), and it wouldn't connect. After trying everything, I simply restarted the computer and the problem was solved." OK, I got to this point too, but after both restarting the computer, and unistalling and reinstalling the Vupoint device, following the instructions carefully, I still could not get the scanner to work. I have emailed the mfr. and if I get a response, I will add to these comments.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I received my slide scanner from Hammacher Schlemmer today. It installed easily, with instructions easy to follow. After rebooting I started scanning slides. It does a very good job on 80% of my slides. If the slide used flash photography from back in the 60s, the high contrast parts of the pictures screw up the setting and some of the faces are washed out. But if you scan an outside shot, it scans and excellent picture. Looking at my Photo Deluxe program, the picture was about 5x8 with 300 dpi resolution. Very good for printing. The only con is you cannot adjust what the scanner sets for exposure resolution, and if there is a bright spot in the picture, the other part of the picture is underexposed in the scan.I would recommend it for the $100 price. Does a much better job than my HP flat bed scanner with slide accessory. Pictures scanned are bright and clear, and except for the few with bright spots that ruined the proper exposure, I am pleased. Thanks to all the people who commented on this scanner, especially Michael Kiely, who wrote a thorough review and provided good information that I made my decision to buy on.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I bought one of these VuPoint slide & negative scanners from ThinkGeek as a Christmas gift for my parents, who have lots of color slides in storage. I had 3 main problems with the device and its software:1) Installation of the driver and image capture/editing software seemed to go smoothly on a Dell running the required WinXP with 2.0 USB connection, but the image capture program crashed every time I launched it to do a scan. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software 3 times with no improvement. I finally found that by quickly clicking on the page margin 8 or 10 times, I could keep the program open. I have no idea why that worked.2) The right-hand margin of each slide was cut off in the image, producing a fat black line and loss of content on that side. The slides were taken 40 years ago with 35mm film and seemed to fit the slide holder adequately, so I do not know why the alignment was incorrect. This happened for all 3 spots in the slide holder.3) The worst problem was the image quality. The scan is dynamic and you are supposed to wait until the image stabilizes. Other reviews of this device indicated that stopping the scan too early would result in a poor-quality image. So, I waited anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds for the image to stop changing. The result was images that were horribly bleached out. A bright blue sky became a white hole with yellow margins. Vibrant green pine trees ended up reddish brown, looking like they were dead. If I stopped the scan earlier (say, after 3 to 5 seconds), the colors were more true but objects in the picture were out of focus. The original slides were 45 years old but were high quality with no fading or discoloration (unlike the scanned images!).The good news is that I bought the scanner from ThinkGeek, and they have agreed to accept it for a refund even though I exceeded their 30-day return policy. They have been great--lowest price among competitors, fast processing, fast shipment, and now, generous and sympathetic return policy.I have not returned the scanner yet, so if anybody using this scanner has any suggestions that would solve these problems, I would sure appreciate some advice. I would like to be able to use it after all but the quality of the images I am getting is unacceptable. I will try the "quick capture" method mentioned in a previous post (even though it is NOT what the manufacturer recommends).

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
Will the item in question convert my black and white negatives from the 30's and 40's into a decent picture, providing the negatives are in good shape?
I've just got one for Christmas and I'm trying it right now. First, I have scanned some b/w negatives and the results were pretty decent, but when I started to do color it was horrible. I figured out the problem though: they tell you to wait a few seconds so the scanner warms up, don't wait! As soon as you click in "acquire from scanner" click in "snap shot" and the result will be 10 times better, then, Photoshop is the answer. I haven't tried any slides, but I can imagine you'll have to do the same!

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I purchased the Vupoint scanner from Fingerhut.com for $99. I connected the scanner to my Windows XP Home machine (the FAQ says Vista is NOT supported) and did some sample slides and negatives. I was hoping the image quality would match that from a $500 Nikon scanner. Well, it doesn't. The images are soft and blurry, lack color range (even at 48bit setting) and have poor detail even though the scanned resolution is 3360 x 5184 pixels. To scan a slide or negative and transfer the file to the computer in Jpg format takes about a minute and the files are about 10 MB. Images scanned in TIFF format take about a minute and a half and are 100 MB but still look poor. I couldn't see much difference between a JPG and TIFF scan of the same slide. The device does what is advertised but not at the quality I was hoping for. You get what you pay for.Having said that, I showed the scanned photos to my wife and she thought they looked okay. When I showed her the original slides she realized that the quality wasn't as good. So, the device might be acceptable for web and e-mail, and probably okay for smaller (3x5) prints.People who are not familiar with higher quality scans (or TIFF or RAW files) may not object to the quality. Adding some simple color correction and sharpening does make the scan more acceptable. (One of the few things most gurus seem to agree on is that ALL scans, even from most expensive scanners, need sharpening). The device was easy to install and use. Although another person I helped with the scanner had issues installing the device on an IBM laptop. The live preview wasn't working correctly but it did scan okay. I contacted Vupoint technical support about the issue and they were not helpful. The device shows up as a Twain device in my Photoshop Elements 5 (use FILE- IMPORT - OVT SCANNER) but lacks the "Calibrate" button that shows up when using the included Photo Impressions 6 software. The resolution is always fixed at 2592x1680 and the other resolution settings are grayed out. I haven't found a Mac driver yet.Bottom line: If you consider yourself a professional photographer (or a serious amateur) this is not the device for you. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to convert your 35 mm slides and negatives to digital files on your computer the VuPoint may work for you. Fingerhut allows 30 days to return the unit. Good luck.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
Does anyone on here want to sell me theirs for Christmas? Why would you need to keep it after you\'ve converted your slides? Thanks, Mark (oh, I\'ve also got some of those things that are showing up at the bottom of the screen that let you turn pictures into throws or tapestries...maybe we could trade....)

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I ordered this months ago and after waiting through the backorders it finally arrived and I just get fuzz. No picture at all. I called customer service and they recommended i download phototimpression Gold, which did not help at all. I will now have to return and wait through the backorders for another one. Has anyone else found a similar problem?

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
My father has 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 slides taken in 1952-53. I saw that someone else asked the question about this format, and whether or not the machine will handle it. Waiting for an answer. Or, does the lens size automatically "crop" the slides, so that you wouldn't get the full image anyway? Very new at this game and am finding the comments quite helpful so far.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
An addendum to my comments just above:I saved your Greece photo and applied the Sharpen feature to it from Photoimpact.
Having read your review and user comments, and looking at your scanned images, I am not at all impressed with the resolution you showed with a maximum 677 pixel width. Everything was fuzzy. However, the color was good. I will stick with my Primefilm 3650 slide/negative scanner, with which I have had excellent results with thousands of slides. I can crop before scanning at 2100 dpi, which has allowed me to scan hundreds of old 3-D slides (with two images per mount) and save them at full 700 pixel screen width, even though they are not much more than half the size of 35-mm slides. It is slow, however, and takes about 6 minutes per slide before saving the corrected JPG image. It has ICE technology that REMOVES ALL DUST AND SPECKS from the image while scanning! You do not have to dust off your slides, or clone background. It's a great timesaver and temper calmer. (I use Ulead Photoimpact for editing).I was going to get the Veho scanner for my son for Christmas, but I have changed my mind after viewing your fuzzy results.

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
I purchased the slide converter last week. I like it and feel it is user friendly. What I don't like is the product description online nor the instruction manual states that the slide scan will 'cut off' parts of the picture due to the one size hole that it is scanned through. I have slides from the 1960's and cannot scan all of them because it does not cover the entire slide and it will 'cut off' important scenary or people that are in the picture. Without a scan of the entire slide, some slides will not be able to be scanned. They should design a slide window that will fit different size slides. Some slides have more framing around them than others. I have scanned about 80 of my slides and all of them have something cut out of them when scanned. Hope this helps

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
Michael seems to be the one who has the most knowledge about the scanner. I would like to know if there is any chance that the scanner will take 2 and a quarter by 2 and a quarter slides from 120 film? Thanks

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
Mike: Does PhotoShop allow you to correct (lessen) the over-filtering characteristic of the converter?

Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter
Click Here to Read Full Post and Comments
