On further thought, the idea of using urine makes sense historically. Urine is essentially a sterile saline solution. Those without access to such a sterile solution could safetly make use of it. Note using saline can dry out the nasal passages, which is bad, and using a non-sterile solution could introduce bacteria. Further, morning urine is more concentrated generally, so mixing it with a little water makes sense.Now, that's knowing what we know today. How someone figured that out way back when is beyond me. Budhists are a urine crazy, recommending one drink a glass of their morning product to rejuvenate themselves, so it's probably related to that.All that said, though, urine might not be a great idea. Water soluble toxins are released from the body primarily through the urine. So while urine contains your excess salt, urea, etc it also concentrates anything else your liver and kidneys decided shouldn't be in your blood. Pouring that through your nose where it can sit in your sinuses might not be a great idea.So, if you're ever caught in the woods and need to Neti, urine is safe enough and better than plain water. If you're in modern society, though, a proper saline solution is easy enough to come by.

Holy crap, Adhyatma probably wasn't joking! Look here: http://www.yoga.co.za/component/content/article/101_They recommend a 50% urine 50% water solution. "If you collect the middle stream from the first urine in the morning and fill the neti pot with a 50% urine and 50% warm water solution you do not need salt."I've used Neti before, but I think I'll stick with the salt, thank you.

After using the neti pot for a week I delevoped extreme pain upon pouring the water through my nasal passages. I think it is due to the chemicals found in the tap water. Try using distilled warm water only!

I recommend Nasaline for this. It's a syringe with a rubber head that fits the nostril... and you control how much force to use. I use it twice a day this time of year.

I just watched this on OPRAH..Dr. OZ had suggested to someone on the show to try it..w/water and salt that is..and she said it worked ..she no longer has to take any meds for sinus/allergy..Dr.Oz said the water goes up thru your nose to as far as it can go fills in all the membranes and removes and cleanses then it comes out the otherside..looks strange...but i'm up for anything that helps w/o having to take medicine..I think that's what's wrong w/the world today..we have medicine for everything...

I have done Neti every day (minus perhap 7) for 9 yrs, and I love it. It's better than a coffee in the morning, and I couldn't imagine life without it. I get so much clarity, mental alertness, and relaxation from Neti.Try using 1/3 urine for even better results. The antibacterial properties of urine can get rid of any annoying little pathogens that may be lurking in the throat, nose, or sinus. Om.

I know, it looks like a stupid hippie thing but it really works. It doesn\'t go into your throat, it just goes into your sinuses and cleans it. It isn\'t new, it\'s been around forever.

Any one suffering from chronic sinus or allergies will benefit greatly. I have. Two hints, first it is best to use distilled water due to most metropolitan area water treatment chemicals, and second, use organic, non-iodized salt 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon for the best balance of antibiotic and cleansing results.
