The next time you feel the soft, sensual drape of silk, take a moment to pay your respects to a
blind, flightless moth, Bombyx mori. This
unbeautiful creature begins life about a week before it
dies, but in that short time it lays 500 or more
eggs.
Those eggs, so minute that 100 of them weigh
only one gram, produce thousands of worms, and an ounce of
those worms, munching about one ton of mulberry leaves,
produce twelve pounds of raw silk.
Since purity is everything in silk, we obtain ours from
cocoons in mountainous regions that rise high above
urban air pollution. The pollution may be relatively new -
the ancient art of making silk is anything but - and no
technology is likely to come along anytime soon to keep the
Bombyx from gently threading its wares into the
fabric of our lives.
