As I write this, a strong 5.8 earthquake has just struck downtown Los Angeles, not the Big One, but definitely a good jolt and a possible warning of things to come. Creepy.

If you live in California, Japan, along a fault line or anywhere there are regular earthquakes occuring, you should definitely check out the Gragraph Home Earthquake Seismograph ($159). I'm sure that you are completely used to the tremors by now and probably even sleep right through them. That's the problem! You have smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and severe weather alarms to save your life, but if you are prone to quakes, shouldn't you have an earthquake alarm as well?

The Gragraph is a digital seimograph for your home that is able to perceive seismic shaking from earthquakes. If it detects a quake that is between 3-10 on the Richter Scale, it measures the intensity, displays it on screen, records the data in its calendar and warns you with sounds and verbal(Japanese) alarms. It even activates a safety light during the night as a safety precaution. What's nice is that it can also serve as a tabletop or bedside clock and calendar. I don't know about you, but it would give me a little peace of mind of getting flattened by my house in the middle of the night. The experts always say that it's not if, it's when...

  • Perceives shaking, and indicates on display
  • Warns of shaking with sound and voice
  • Indicates level from 3-10
  • Keeps record of previous seismic activity
  • During the night, it activates a safety light
  • Calendar/Clock function
  • Color: grey, pink, yellow, blue
  • Time precision: 30 seconds +/- per month
  • Timer (30 minutes)
  • Temperature range: -10° + 40°
  • Audio player adapter
  • Size: 4.7" x 5.1" x 5"
