Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter

How many of you have boxes and boxes of old slides and negatives sitting on a shelf in a closet somewhere gathering dust? It's not a lot of fun to pull out that old slide projector either and it probably doesn't even work! It's time to back up and preserve those past memories of family, friends and vacations before they are lost forever.

The cool new Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter converts your old 35mm slides and film negatives into digital images easily without having to rely on a pricey conversion service. Simply plug the USB device into your PC, place your slides or negatives onto the tray, touch the button and sit back as they are scanned and converted into professional-quality digital copies without any loss of resolution right onto your hard drive. Good news for your old photos, bad news for everyone who now has to sit through yet another slide show of the "good old days".

Update: This is an all-new version that is now Windows Vista compatible and requires USB 2.0. Also, if you have a lot of slides and negatives to scan there is now a package of Six Additional Trays available.

I received the unit from Frontgate, tried to copy various slides. Old Kodachromes ASA 25 I believe they were [circa 1957] and Kodachromes and Ectachromes from the 90's. No matter what settings I used for color depth, dpi or JPG quality the results were terrible. Very heavy contrast and blown highlights. In addition I found the scanning terrible. I found I had much better results when in the recent past I photographed with my Pentax K100D projected slides on heavy white matte paper I bought at an art supply store. In addition this process is much quicker and easier to control. I am sending the unit back to Frontgate for a refund. I will be out the two way shipping charges of $23.00 but will chalk it off to a learning experience. I hope others who have bought this unit will have better results than I.

Still no ideas for a comparible product that will work with Mac? The Hammer Schlemmer ad didn't say it would or would not work on what operating system. I have it here and am really disapointed I can't use it!

Can you stack the slides like an old fashioned slide viewer? How many?

You can insert up to three slides into a tray with a latching cover which is slid into the device. The software reads and adjusts the levels. You then press a button on the device or on the software screen. Up to 12 images can be stored on the software and then must be transfered to the Artsoft software for editing and storage direction. The latching cover on the tray has a small release which can be difficult to unlatch when reloading. The tray can be slid in one direction so if you wanted to rescan a slide once you went by it you have to slide the tray out and reinsert. As you know from my post above I did not like this converter and have sent it back.

Will this device accommodate 35mm roll microfilm? If so, any chance a microfilmed document will be readable?

As it is manufactured the film tray/holder can hold a strip of 6 negatives. As I was not interested in the film strip holder I did not examine it to see if it could be modified to allow a roll of film to be pushed or pulled thru it.

Michael, Have you completed your check of the digital slide converter? You expected to get one about Oct 20, and to make a demo. Coming soon? TIA, Rita

Can you scan the slides directly into PhotoShop (I have CS2) rather than the software program it is packaged with? If so, couldn't you use it on a Mac? Or has anyone found a similar device that works on Mac?

Michael, et al: It *sounds* like just the product a lot of us could use... something to help me clean out filing cabinets of old slides. Did you get yours yet? How do you like it? Other than Bill Bourdon\'s comments above (he sent his back for a refund), I don\'t see any recommendations. I have a few thousand memories on old and fading slides to convert. The color adjustment is a software issue to be dealt with downstream (right?), but I don\'t want to start off the venture spending time and money on junk hardware.

Is there anyone actually using this product that likes it? I am about to order it, but based on Bill Bourdon's review above, I will probably not. Does anyone know of a similar product available? Thanks

to anyone in the u.k., i'm not sure if it can be sent overseas, but what i always do to test shipping (i'm in the u.s.) is to just put the item in my cart and go through checkout without putting in my credit card information. on the schlemmer website you enter your credit card information last, so it shows you the shipping price and total price before you make any final decisions. i'm sure if you are in the u.k. it will either tell you yes they can ship it or no they can't.
