The Ecosphere ($250) is a self-sustaining delicate balance of earth, water, air and life (red shrimp, algae and microbes) - all parts of a working self-supporting ecosystem - wrapped up in a beautiful glass sphere for your desk or home. All you need to provide is 6-12 hours of light day. It's a living world right in the palm of your hands, so whatever you do, don't shake it!

  • Light - The foundation of life. Fluorescent light or indirect sunlight provides everything your ecosystem needs; there's no feeding or cleaning required.
  • Seawater - Provides the backdrop for this educational, self-contained marine environment.
  • Red shrimp - Chosen for their nonaggressive tendencies towards one another, these tiny crustaceans live in perfect harmony with their mini environment.
  • Algae - Healthy growth sustains and nourishes shrimp by supplying food and oxygen.
  • Microbes - To feed the algae.
  • Other materials - Gorgonia sprig, gravel, shells and glass provide ample hiding places and smooth surfaces for microbes to attach themselves to and thrive.
  • Life expectancy - EcoSphere has an average life expectancy of two years; however, in the right conditions some have lived for up to 10 years!

I want one to let it live happy for about a year, then crack it open and add the human element to it, maybe pour a beer in, maybe a small combustion engine running in there for a few months till it looks really screwed up and pull it all out as a test to see if we can pull out of the mess we are in. If it all dies Ill probably sell everything I own start a cult and throw a huge party with all my members and we will live it up non-stop till the money runs up then finish off with a tall cool glass of kool-aid.

Sky Private is very clever and makes a good point. I'm a 48 y/o office worker and I haven't lived in my mom's basement for 22 years. I know it's uncomfortable to face the reality that we've sent our planet into a downward spiral. Pointing this fact out is hardly shitting on anything. The only way we have a chance of pulling out of this doom is if we are all willing to look at reality as horrible as it is. And, yes, I want one of these pretty baubles sitting on my desk at AT&T next to my LavaLamp. I think I might put one together myself as a DIY project. That way I can rescue it when I've messed up. I can also start it up again if it dies for some reason. Playing GOD is cool when the stakes are low anyway.
