The 7-Foot Upside-Down Pre-Lit Christmas Tree

The holidays may be months away, but for a cool item like this, you may need some extra time to rethink your traditions. They now make 7-Foot Upside-Down Pre-Lit Christmas Trees and it's not as crazy sounding as you think, in fact this is how it was originally done!

The History of the Upside-Down Fir Tree: According to the Christmas Archives, "In the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He did many good works there, and spent much time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry. Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God's Tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. By the 12th century it was being hung, upside-down, from ceilings at Christmastime in Central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity."

Has anyone ever even heard of this tradition before? Let us know what you think in the Comments.

Do some research and this is also an old Pagan tradition. Way to go Green Head!

I couldn’t imagine seeing a tree upside down. Now I see it, and I think its not so pretty. Maybe there is room for more presents, maybe the decorations show better…but that’s not why I celebrate Christmas anyway. A tree isn’t even needed. The reason for Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And he hung right side up on a tree.
I think I’ll keep mine upright, too.

Since the early 1980s, my family and I have had a tradition of “Christmas light looking” where we drive around and view all the decorations in our city. Then, we lived in Longview, WA, where the displays were magnificent. One, in particular, caught more attention than any other. It was a home by the lake in which a huge Christmas tree hung upside down in the window. People would literally stop and stay for a long time, in awe of such a sight. My daugter later went to Germany with her husband, and while there, she heard a girl talking about an “upside down Christmas tree” back home. Her ears pricked up and she asked where this girl had seen it, and VOILA! It was the very same tree.

The upside down tree certainly gets attention, according to these comments, so its definitely a great conversation piece.

I just love it and it really is how it was originally done. My neighbor’s do this every year and they explained it all once. It’s nin the same tradition as hanging mistletoe upside down in the doorway.

You mean people don’t normally put the tree on the floor and not hang it from the ceiling – how original. Psychiatric patient – Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, NY

It looks pretty weird to me! I like the traditional tree A LOT better! Where does the star or the angel go? Sitting by the Christmas Tree with your loved ones will kind of be awkward, don’t ya think?

I think the upside down Christmas tree is Rediculous. But Not only is it rediculous… that i think its totally questioning the christian/ catholic religion. Just like that an upsidedown cross means questioning that christ was realy here. The christmas tree is a symbol of the birth of jesus. Placeing it upside down or hanging it is questioning jesus that he realy excist.
