Earlier this month, representatives of the Hualapai Tribe stated that the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation would be constructing a glass, U-shaped walkway called the Grand Canyon Skywalk, that extends 70 feet over the edge of the Grand Canyon with a suspension of 4000 feet over the Colorado River. Along with this glass skywalk there will be a visitor's center offering meeting venues and a cafe that will feature outdoor edge patio seating. They hope to have this new attraction completed and open to the public by early 2006, but as of this writing, they have still yet to find an insurer for the project!

This "attraction" is definitely not for the timid or for those who have a fear of heights, but there may be some thrillseekers out there who are willing to brave the depths of the Grand Canyon. Would you take one step out on this thing? Let us know in the Comments below.

UPDATE: Construction has begun on the Grand Canyon Skywalk! Click Here to read the press release.

UPDATE 2: The Grand Canyon Skywalk has been unveiled and officially opens to the public March 28, 2007! Check out some pictures of reporters actually out on the skywalk walking on the glass below. Everyone who is looking for a fun little getaway, this would be an incredible thing to behold. I can't wait to actually step out over the canyon.

Why mar the beauty of this place. What is wrong with us that we think that we can improve on nature. Leave it alone…

Does it have a top? I can just see someone crawling over just to make a splash.
My knees are aching just looking at the picture-thanks but no thanks.

Nothing in Britian or Canada can compair to the Grand Canyon, and Mr. Whitehead I think you would have a hard time seeing this tiny 70 foot long walkway in the vastness of the GRAND Canyon. Yes I will be one of the first ones to walk the walk.

“If you build it, they will come.” I’m up for this one and I will come and walk it. And for the Brit’s comments, you’re just jealous you don’t have a canyon like this in the United Kingdom to attract us “idiot yanks.”

Next year there will be a hotel or something on the cliff on the other side so you will have something to look at. Personally I would’nt pay that price to see something I could see from the side for nothing but some folks will.

I don’t agree with building this type of attraction at the Grand Canyon. I’ve visited many times and there are more than enough natural observation spots for people to enjoy the breath taking views. So, what will be next…a roller coaster in the canyon?

I would tremble and be afraid like a little girl – I don’t know if I could overcome my fear of heights long enough to take a couple of steps out on it.

According to www.destinationgrandcanyon.com, the price for the Skywalk is still $25.00 and there is nothing saying the viewing is limited to 5 minutes. When you get to that site, click “Tour Packages” on the right, then “Options”.

So, for $25.00 I might do it. But it’s still pretty intense.

Yeah, I just read the same thing. $25.00 is not too bad, but I still wouldn’t go. The rock erosion would be a major consideration, as would be the winds, as would be the building codes on indian reservations… I wouldn’t be sitting in the Canadian glass- bottomed restaurant eating dinner a zillion feet up either though…

Without a doubt, my whole family will love the experience…
