Glass-Bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk - 4000 Feet High!

Earlier this month, representatives of the Hualapai Tribe stated that the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation would be constructing a glass, U-shaped walkway called the Grand Canyon Skywalk, that extends 70 feet over the edge of the Grand Canyon with a suspension of 4000 feet over the Colorado River. Along with this glass skywalk there will be a visitor's center offering meeting venues and a cafe that will feature outdoor edge patio seating. They hope to have this new attraction completed and open to the public by early 2006, but as of this writing, they have still yet to find an insurer for the project!

This "attraction" is definitely not for the timid or for those who have a fear of heights, but there may be some thrillseekers out there who are willing to brave the depths of the Grand Canyon. Would you take one step out on this thing? Let us know in the Comments below.

UPDATE: Construction has begun on the Grand Canyon Skywalk! Click Here to read the press release.

UPDATE 2: The Grand Canyon Skywalk has been unveiled and officially opens to the public March 28, 2007! Check out some pictures of reporters actually out on the skywalk walking on the glass below. Everyone who is looking for a fun little getaway, this would be an incredible thing to behold. I can't wait to actually step out over the canyon.

I’m with Dennis Whitehead. This contraption will give a person about 5 to 10 minutes of thrill, yet permanently scar the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon. Think about it, folks!

No way in hell would I go out on this thing. Well maybe if someone paid me, but I wouldn’t pay to experience fear like this. That’s nuts looking.

I would love to walk the skywalk. However $75. is a little steep and 5 minutes isn’t long enough to enjoy the view. I am equally incensed by thoes who are against this. They don’t want whats best for the environment, they want it reserved for themselves. I’ve been there and seen them pack it in and not pack it out.

The activist enviros, stop oil & gas, logging, snow mobiling, 4-wheeling, etc. This doing the same thing to our landscape, only permanently. I don’t know how they’ll get away with it. Good luck.

I think there is a lot to consider on this endeavor. What a way to get even with the white folk (payback time) when they are on this and the ledge crumbles under the pressure and they fall to the deep abyss. I have lived on reservations for 21 years and by looking at the native “pride” of the junked out cars, houses, etc… I don’t know who will run this any way. Also, why charge a fee for the white man to walk on this terror. They are the ones paying for it. Some people think Native Americans are stupid. Ha! How many non-Indians can you say have a house given to them, laws of their own, don’t have to work and yet get colleges, schools, casinos, entertainment (such as this skywalk) funded without paying any taxes in? They aren’t stupid the white man is. All these freebies are costing the United States. No I would never go on this for many reasons.

Ah Yes…Been done before, in the Great White North a place called Canada over 30 years ago….
Located in the heart of Downtown Toronto. Near the top, a 24 sq. metre glass floor allows visitors to watch the streets under their feet.
